Schooling as the real relocation decision

For relocating families, the school decision comes before the property decision — and often decides it. Mallorca supports an unusually deep bench of international schools for an island of its size: British-curriculum colleges, an established German school, IB programmes and bilingual Spanish options, concentrated in an arc from Palma through Calvià with outposts as far as Manacor. Waiting lists at the most requested schools are real, especially at primary entry points, which is why we raise the subject in our first conversation with family buyers.

The main names are well established. Agora Portals International School in Portals Nous and King Richard III College nearby anchor the southwest; Bellver International College, founded in the 1950s, and Baleares International College serve the Palma side; The Academy International School sits near Marratxí; Eurocampus in Palma combines the German Eurocampus Deutsche Schule and the French Lycée; and the Rafa Nadal International School operates by Manacor for families in the east. Palma College adds British sixth-form education in the city centre.

Fees typically run between €8,000 and €20,000 per child per year depending on school and stage — modest against comparable London, Zurich or Munich schooling, which is itself a factor in many relocations. Our role is not to rank schools; it is to map the school run against the property search so both decisions are made with real distances, real traffic and real term-time life in mind.

Matching school choice to where you live

Geography does more work than league tables here. The southwest cluster — Agora Portals and King Richard III in Portals Nous — pairs naturally with homes in Bendinat, Portals Nous, Costa d'en Blanes, Santa Ponsa and Son Vida: school runs of five to fifteen minutes. Families choosing Palma living lean on Bellver International College near La Bonanova, Palma College in the centre, and Eurocampus for German- and French-speaking households; the city's villa ring and Santa Catalina both work well for these.

Baleares International College's Sa Porrassa campus suits Santa Ponsa and the southwest's outer towns, while The Academy near Marratxí draws from central Palma suburbs and the villages towards Santa Maria. The Rafa Nadal International School near Manacor, with boarding options, opens up the east coast and country fincas around Artà and Portocolom. The practical rule we give clients: drive your intended school run at 8:15 on a term-time weekday before signing anything. Twenty minutes on the map can be forty in September.

Which are the leading international schools on the island?

The most established names: Agora Portals International School and King Richard III College in the southwest; Bellver International College and Baleares International College on the Palma side; The Academy International School near Marratxí; Eurocampus (German and French curricula) in Palma; the Rafa Nadal International School by Manacor; and Palma College for sixth form. 'Best' depends on curriculum, language and — critically — your daily distance to the gate.

What do fees cost and how hard is admission?

Expect roughly €8,000 to €20,000 per child per year depending on school and age, plus enrolment fees, transport and extras. Admission pressure is real at popular entry years — nursery, reception and Year 7 equivalents — with waiting lists at the southwest schools in particular. Apply as early as your plans allow, ideally two terms ahead. Schools generally assess by interview and prior records rather than competitive examination at younger ages.

Which curricula and languages are available?

British curriculum through GCSE and A-Level dominates the international sector, with IB available at select schools including Agora Portals. Eurocampus offers full German and French national curricula in Palma. All international schools teach Spanish, and children typically absorb it quickly; Catalan appears mainly in the state and concertado systems. For families planning long-term integration, several schools deliberately balance international curriculum with strong Spanish provision.

Which residential areas work best for each school cluster?

Southwest schools pair with Bendinat, Portals Nous, Santa Ponsa, Costa d'en Blanes and Son Vida — runs of five to fifteen minutes. Palma schools suit the city's villa ring (Génova, La Bonanova, Sa Teulera) and central quarters like Santa Catalina. The Academy fits Marratxí and the Santa Maria villages; Rafa Nadal International opens the east coast. We routinely build property shortlists around a confirmed school place rather than the reverse.
